Lighting Sculptures
Pam Morris - Exciting Lighting

Pam Morris was commissioned to create two individual glass pendant sculpture chandeliers for the interior of Sydney’s new restaurant & bar: Flying Fish, at Jones Bay Wharf Pyrmont.

Upon receiving the original design brief for Flying Fish Pam Morris travelled to Australia to research the restaurant site and gather ideas from this magnificent country. All the inspiration Morris needed, she found during a sequence of underwater expeditions on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland Australia.

‘Reef Spawn’

The first of Morris’ works is suspended high in the loft atrium of Flying Fish, and is titled - Reef Spawn.

Measuring 15ft x 12ft x 7ft this luminaire features 270 individual hand-cast resin globes, each seasoned with Australian oyster shell and opal dust. The precision of the hand casting combined with the advanced lighting technology invites you to explore this luminaire from a range of dining locations.

“What’s interesting about this piece is that from underneath there is a tremendous sense of velocity, a feeling of objects coming towards you, yet when you are upstairs looking out into the luminaire there is a meditative, mesmerizing feeling of floating,” said Pam Morris.

Pam Morris say’s her inspiration for this luminaire came during an underwater exploration of the Great Barrier Reef, “When you’re in the reef floating through particles, there’s a sense of effortlessness and freedom; that state of relaxation is experienced when viewing this luminaire.

‘Flying Fish’

Morris’ second installation is suspended high above the two private dining rooms. Twelve delicate pieces of art come together to form the abstract shape of a school of fish with a motion that sweeps through the rafters. Each individual piece is made from blown glass and has a ‘hand-painted-watercolour-effect’ application; casting a rich, warm, golden hue against the restaurants dark timber surrounds. Morris says this luminaire creates a sensory experience, “It’s there to seduce you rather than alert you.”

Morris said “Fish don’t fly…this sculpture is a metaphor about achieving the impossible installation. It’s an exploration about reaching beyond!”
